Selecting respondents for the Thomas 360
Who should be nominated as a 360 respondent?
Nominated respondents may include:
- Manager: At least one manager, with a maximum of two, should be assigned to account for both direct and dotted reporting lines.
- Peers: Individuals who work at the same hierarchical level as the participant. The system requires a minimum of 2 peers.
- Team: This can be the team that reports to the participant or the team in which they operate. The system minimum is 2.
- Customer: This designation is optional, meaning no minimum or maximum number is required. You may also include it if the participant is collaborating with any third-party suppliers or consultants whose feedback on their 360 review would be valuable.
What makes a good respondent?
People often instinctively ask friends for positive feedback, however it can be challenging for them to provide truly constructive and impartial criticism.
There's also real power in asking people who may find it challenging to work with the participant. People can learn a lot by including their perception in the report, and so improve the working relationship for both parties moving forward.
Ideally, a respondent needs to be someone who:- Knows the participant
- Has worked with or for the participant
- Has seen the participant's work
- Can be objective in their feedback
