The science that powers the Emotional Intelligence assessment

Thomas’ Emotional Intelligence assessment enables organisations to gain insights into how people perceive, manage, and respond to emotions. Emotional intelligence supports how individuals communicate, collaborate, and lead.

Individuals with high emotional intelligence tend to manage pressure effectively, maintain positive relationships, and adapt well to change.

The reliability and predictability of the Emotional Intelligence assessment

In 2024, 349 working adults completed the Emotional Intelligence assessment. The assessment demonstrated strong internal reliability across all factors and traits, with an average (median) reliability score of 0.81. This exceeds the international benchmark of 0.70, indicating the assessment consistently measures what it is intended to.

The Emotional Intelligence assessment is grounded in leading models, particularly those of Daniel Goleman and Konstantinos Petrides. It measures three core factors: Relationship Management, Self-awareness and Self-management. Each factor is composed of four individual traits, providing a comprehensive picture of someone’s emotional functioning at work.

The Emotional Intelligence assessment can predict key workplace behaviours, including:

• Task performance
• Helpful workplace behaviours such as teamwork and initiative
• Stronger connection at work, with individuals who have high emotional intelligence reporting greater feelings of belonging, trust and cohesion
• Higher engagement, as emotionally intelligent people feel more energised, dedicated and absorbed in their work
• Improved performance, as emotionally intelligent individuals are more likely to manage challenges and deliver consistent results
• Greater retention, with emotionally intelligent employees less likely to leave, supporting stability and reducing costs
• Enhanced team effectiveness, as emotional intelligence helps people navigate relationships and build healthier team dynamics

These findings confirm that emotional intelligence is a powerful predictor of individual and organisational success.
